The Breast Reduction Procedure
There are a number of advanced techniques used for breast reduction surgery. All involve removing some skin and breast tissue, reshaping the remaining breast tissue, and repositioning the nipple and areola. The technique used determines where the incisions are made and where the scars will be. Dr Norris has received extensive training in the use of short-scar techniques that can minimise the amount and length of the scars. During the procedure, Dr Norris creates incisions around the breast and removes excess tissue and skin. He then reshapes the breast and repositions the nipple to a higher and more youthful position for an improved appearance. Incisions are closed with dissolvable sutures to save you the inconvenience of having them removed. Breast reduction surgery usually takes three hours and is performed under general anaesthesia. An additional two hours is necessary for post-surgical recovery.
Recovery from Breast Reduction Surgery
After breast reduction surgery, you should plan on taking it easy for a few days. You may experience some swelling, bruising, and discomfort. Many patients experience little to no pain and report a tight feeling in their breasts. However, medication can alleviate any pain. Some patients also lose sensation in their nipples for the first few months. This loss is temporary and sensation will return gradually.
Dr Norris recommends that you wear a support bra 24 hours a day for six weeks after breast reduction surgery to help the breasts maintain their new shape. Patients can usually return to their normal activities in a few weeks and begin exercising in approximately one month. Final results of breast reduction surgery can usually be seen after several months.
